Six Inspiring Ways to Honor Black History Month

Celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month recognizes the many trailblazing contributions of Black Americans.

February is the time to reflect on the notable accomplishments of Black Americans throughout history, many of which have been overlooked. Whether you're seeking to learn more about prominent African American historical figures, immerse yourself in the culture, or share your experiences, endless opportunities exist to celebrate Black History Month.

Please read on for six of our favorites.

Support local Black-owned businesses.

Throughout the month of February, make a point to shop at, dine in, or explore local companies owned by African American entrepreneurs or that have historical importance. This effort builds positive bonds with area business owners and empowers your community, too.

Visit a museum or enjoy some artwork.

Learn about Black pioneers in American history with special programming at iconic Delaware institutions like the Mitchell Center for African American Heritage in Wilmington. There you can enjoy an exclusive showing of “Journey to Freedom”, which shares the story of the first documented black resident of Delaware, Antoni Swart. Or, stop by the Lewes Historical Society to take in an exclusive art exhibition, “Seventeen Men: Portraits of Black Civil War Soldiers” by Shayne Davidson. This exhibition commemorates black Civil War soldiers, including seven servicemen who once walked the streets of Lewes many years ago.

Grab a good book.

Libraries and bookstores are overflowing with amazing works of literature, history, and biography. Why not find a book about Black history you’ve never read to gain a new perspective? Favorites include I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.

Put on your walking shoes.

The African American History and Legacy Walking Tour of Lewes offers a unique stroll through the town’s picturesque streets. Listen to fascinating stories about the diverse residents who left a longstanding legacy in this historic town by the sea.
